What to Wear: Outdoor Family Session

Great mix of colors and patterns! It all coordinates so well!

Oh yes, I know dressing everyone is probably the MAIN point of stress for most moms with an upcoming session so I am HERE TO HELP! Let me start off with saying my pointers are specific to my style of photography. Photographers all have their preferences; what I recommend isn’t the universally correct way to dress for a session! But, chances are, if you’ve decided to trust me with documenting your family, you appreciate my style so it would make sense to take my pointers! With that being said, don’t let my overabundance of suggestions stress you out more! Take it as guidance and go from there!

Colors that photograph super well

I love earthy tones and warmth! Give me all the rust, burnt red, mustard yellow, forest greens, deep blues, and browns! Try to stay away from neon because it reflects onto skin (and no one wants neon pink or green skin). I’d say include at least 3 colors with neutrals added in (like rust, forest green and blue with tans and creams as neutrals). Try having warms and cools in your collective outfits.

Where to start:

I ALWAYS recommend starting with you, mom. Find something that you feel absolutely beautiful in. Moms in long, flowy dresses always look elegant and the movement it adds to sessions is stunning! In addition to a dress, throw in fun and meaningful accessories! If you are a hat girl, rock it! If you have special jewelry, throw it on! It will add interest and different things to focus on in the images! When picking out shoes, remember that in our sessions I might (okay, probably will) be making you climb rocks, hills or navigate bumpy terrain to get to our awesome spots! So if you insist on your platform shoes, maybe bring a pair of safe sandals to wear while we trek to our location.

dressing your crew:

If you take anything from this whole post, take this: Focus on coordinating, not matching. No one print or article of clothing has to pull everything together. Base everyone else’s vibe and color palette (hopefully similar to the colors mentioned above) on yours (Mom).

Accesorize! Kids are especially easy to put extras on. Suspenders, hats, bows, headbands, socks, and more! Put the boys/men in varying pants/shorts colors (dark blue, green, tan, etc). Include prints, solids, and varying textures! And showing some skin with the littles is always adorable; everyone loves baby fat rolls!

Lastly,

Don’t stress about it too much! If you want input, I am SO happy to text you ideas or to receive pictures of what you are working with and give you suggestions. Don’t ever feel like you are bothering me by asking for help or letting me know your concerns. I want you to feel as confident and beautiful as possible!
